The iPad launched on April 3, 2010. I got mine on April 7 and worked hard to get an iPad version of Topo Maps working as quickly as possible. It was available on April 23 and this is what it looked like, on the original iPad:
The iPad makes a great map viewer and the app was very popular with people who had just bought themselves this exciting new device, selling over a thousand copies in its second full week on the App Store. That's certainly the most I've ever earned in a week!
In June 2026, 16 years after its launch, Apple told me that they proposed to remove the app from their store because it "hasn't been updated within the last three years and doesn't meet a minimum download threshold". They carried this out in August 2026, and Topo Maps for iPad is no longer available for new purchasers.
I think this is sad, because it was a piece of history from the earliest days of the iPad. There can't be many apps from that time that are still functional, used, and supported. People frequently tell me that they like these apps because they have been using them for many years and they are used to how they work. They don't want constant updates - yet Apple have other ideas about what makes a good app.
